Managing Sensitive Teeth

Lots of us suffer from the effects of tooth sensitivity. Typically, this is triggered by eating something very cold, very hot, or very sugary; our teeth react painfully to them, radiating discomfort and making us worry about our dental health. While it's difficult to pin down a cause for extreme tooth sensitivity - gum problems and tooth injuries are often to blame - the dental industry has responded with great tactics for management of the problem. Specialized products - and of course professional dental care itself - can help to alleviate the issue in many individuals. Here are some suggestions for managing sensitive teeth:


Include your dentist.

As with all oral health issues, tooth sensitivity is one your dentist needs to know about. He or she can help you to manage the symptoms and treat the problem, utilizing specialized dental substances and products to help strengthen your teeth and developing a comprehensive treatment plan. Also, only your dentist can examine whether you would benefit from a root canal of other repair of a troublesome tooth or teeth. Not to mention, he or she can recommend at-home products designed to aid the problem of tooth sensitivity.


Use an electric toothbrush.

Electric toothbrushes are extremely effective in cleaning plaque from the teeth. Track your diet.

Again, some foods are notorious for exploiting the sensitivity of your teeth. Cold foods like ice cream or iced drinks, and sweet foods like sugary snacks, can cause your sensitive teeth to go haywire with pain and discomfort. So take control of the situation by tracking your eating: keep a journal of your food intake and the level of sensitivity you experience to each. From there, you can easily discern which foods and drinks are exacerbating the problem and plan your diet accordingly. Also, it's a good idea to share this journal with your dentist. He or she could get a better picture of your tooth sensitivity.
